In the 1860ies one of Hambletonian's sons, Dexter, trotted a mile in the record time of 2:17¼. Dexter was immediately sold to a Robert Bonner $25,000 as a cart horse. Bonner was a very strictly moral man who didn't want anything to do with racing or betting, so nobody knows if Dexter could have been even faster had he had the chance.
